EXPERIENCING FIRSTS
BIODEGRADABLE VINYL WRAP  |  2023
Foundation Expanded: MAPP directly connects Pratt Institute students and faculty to civic engagement through public works and improves the experience of the plaza as a prominent and active public space. “Experiencing Firsts” was displayed on Myrtle Avenue Plaza from April 2023 to March 2024.
Whether it be good or bad, I wanted to create a design that would cover a lot of the firsts we experience in our lives. The firsts in our lives are like core memories that stick with us even as we grow older. There’s such a drastic difference between what our childhoods were like, compared to what our lives are today. As the majority of people passing through Myrtle Avenue Plaza are busy and usually walk by the boxes without a second thought, I wanted to create a design where you’re able to have a personal connection with these boxes even when you only catch a glimpse of them.
To showcase that passage of time, I designed each box to take place during a different time of day: daytime (small box), sunset (large box), and nighttime (medium box). The boxes were inspired by the five senses and the memories associated with them. I want viewers walking along Myrtle Avenue to look at the boxes and see the objects scattered across this exaggerated dreamscape and remind them of a memory they’ve had with those objects. I chose to design the boxes in a pixel art form with a limited retro color palette with vibrant warm hues to push the idea that these posters are meant to stimulate the warm feeling of nostalgia when you look at them. I wanted people to look at these boxes and have a smile on their faces because the longer they look at these boxes, they think of a happy memory that would encourage a boost in their mood for the rest of the day.
